Shareable MBA: Leadership in Organization

Why get an MBA? Well, there are plenty of reasons as I mentioned before.

Focusing in on the education component, I need to start somewhere. As candidates explore their path, they discover each top MBA program has its own niche. Again... where to start? According to most rankings, both informal (i.e. the MBAs) and formal (e.g. Businessweek ranking, FT ranking, Economist ranking), Stanford and Harvard are the gold standard. While Stanford is known for entrepreneurship, Harvard is known for leadership.

Let's get started and talk about Leadership.

My "Shareable Stern MBA"

Having now completed my MBA (officially as of 5.22.2014), I have been often asked "Why?"

Pursuing an MBA is a very personal choice, but principally there are 4 reasons my classmates sought after the degree:

1) advance or accelerate career
2) increase career optionality
3) meet likeminded people
4) get a business education

Certainly you can gain each of them without an MBA, but the complete package is very attractive. But it comes at a price! I will painfully pay down my loans over the next n-number of years. $100k in tuition and 2 years of cost of living in NYC is not exactly cheap.

Back in undergrad my friends and I discussed the difference between a top tier MBA and a non top tier MBA (just Google "MBA Rankings"). Back in those uninformed days, we ignorantly decided what was "worth it or not" -- looking at only the top 10 schools or so, completely discriminating all others.

Having had the benefit of taking classes at NYU Stern (in person and paid for it) and a handful of other top MBA programs (via Coursera and iTunesU, for FREE), there is NO DIFFERENCE in the educational value. Always frugal, I want to share my overpriced thoughts in hope to lower costs (and increase the value?) for the next guy.

The following provides high level nuggets of wisdom, and in the subsequent posts I will sprinkle in deeper dives into each subject...

Post my MBA

In thinking about how to use my free time -- now that I have graduated from NYU Stern as an official MBA -- I want to revisit all the things that I learned over the course of the past 2 years. In a bite-sized approach to that goal, I'm going to write about it.

This should get me i) back into writing, since I clearly fell off during the profram, ii) to remember and retain more of the very expensive education iii) provide some free knowledge to the world. My hope is that I format it in such a way that is enjoyable for both nerds and novices.

So now that I am post my MBA, I will post my MBA.

Stay tuned.

Be well, Do good.
